The idea: community recommendations as a starting point
A link in a technical discussion carries context: someone thought a video helped explain a problem or an idea. HackerTube brings this kind of discovery into a dedicated browsing experience. That is a different starting point from searching the entire YouTube catalogue.
Repeated recommendations can be a useful signal, but they are not a guarantee of accuracy. A popular explanation can still be dated, incomplete, or inappropriate for your level. Check the speaker, publication date, and supporting material.
Andrej Karpathy and the project background
Karpathy published a post titled HackerTube on his personal blog. Search-indexed descriptions of his announcement associate the project with Claude Code and videos recommended in Hacker News comments. We link the original post below so readers can check the account directly.
The official About page credits @karpathy and Claude Code. It describes selecting videos linked with commentary by at least three people across at least three months, then analyzing comment intent with Claude. We omit changing catalogue and topic totals.
What it is useful for
Use HackerTube when you want a different starting point for finding technical talks and explanations. It can introduce material you would not have known to search for by title. Follow a promising discovery back to its original source before relying on it.
It is a discovery layer, not an independent video hosting service. YouTube remains relevant for the underlying videos and its wider catalogue. HackerTube Wiki is a separate editorial website; it does not run either service.
Who should try it?
Developers, technically curious readers, and people looking for longer explanations may find the community context useful. If you need a specific creator, an exact title, or a broad entertainment catalogue, a direct YouTube search may be a better first step.
